Air Command and Control

NCIA supports NATO and the Nations with the integration of Air Command and Control capabilities to help preserve the integrity of NATO European Airspace.

The NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS) has been a cornerstone of NATO's peacetime collective air defence mission since the 1950s. Designed to defend NATO forces, populations and territory from threats emanating from all strategic directions, NATINAMDS is a collaborative effort made up of military national and NATO capabilities.

NCIA provides the critical technology that enables the effective management of air and missile defence operations between NATO and the NATO Nations. This technology acts as a glue linking Nations, allowing them share information and enabling interoperability when executing air defence operations.

NCIA addresses common national requirements, pooling resources and provides cost effective solutions to operate and maintain these military capabilities. It also provides support to national systems.

Support to NATO Air Policing mission

NATO Air Policing is a peacetime mission that aims to preserve the security of Alliance airspace. It is a collective task and involves the continuous presence of fighter aircraft and crews, which are ready to react quickly to possible airspace violations.

The mission is carried out using the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), and overseen by the Allied Air Command (AIRCOM), from two combined operations centres: one in Torrejon, Spain and one in Uedem, Germany.

NCIA is responsible for the delivery of the capabilities and products that support the mission, ensuring its continuous operation, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NCIA has CIS Support Units (CSUs) based in Torrejon and Uedem, ensuring the different systems work together and guaranteeing its smooth running without incidents.

One of the critical capabilities to enable the mission is the Air Situation Data Exchange. NCIA supports the exchange of the NATO Recognized Air Picture with NATO Partner Nations, thus enhancing situational awareness at NATO's borders with our Partner Nations.
