NATO hackathon: analyzing classified data

During NATO exercises, incredible amounts of information and data are gathered to achieve the exercise's objectives. And that data can also be put to use to generate interesting insights after the exercise has been completed. Last year, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) hosted a hackathon in The Hague, Netherlands, to explore the classified data generated during NATO's largest exercise in a decade, exercise Trident Juncture 2018.

Five teams participated in the hackathon, which provided valuable insights that can be implemented in future exercises. Participants came from four NATO Member Countries, and four NATO Commands. Five Agency data science experts participated in the exercise.

Exercises prepare NATO Commands and forces for operations and missions. These exercises also yield large amounts of data that help identify areas for improvement in operational planning and decision-making. During such exercises, we can also identify areas where more data should be captured in the future.
