Video: Cyber security at sea, during Exercise Dynamic Mariner 25

During Exercise Dynamic Mariner 25, experts from the NATO Communications and Information Agency's (NCIA) Cyber Rapid Response Team (RRT) deployed to counter a simulated malware threat aboard the Turkish ship TCG Gaziantep. Dynamic Mariner 25 is a tactical level live exercise, sponsored by Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM). The main purpose of the operation is to test NATO’s maritime strength, interoperability, and rapid response capabilities, ensuring that Allies stand ready to protect the sea domain in every threat environment scenario.

Within hours, NCIA cyber experts successfully identified and neutralized the threat using technology and equipment. The team investigated the nature of the simulated cyber-attack to assess its scope, contain the infection, and secure the ship’s communication systems.

Close collaboration with the ship’s crew was key to enabling a swift and effective response, contributing to the success of NCIA’s mission during the exercise.

The RRT is a team of cyber experts ready to deploy to resolve a cyber attack anytime, anywhere. The team proved their readiness to respond within 48 hours, to ensure NATO forces remain resilient and ready to carry out their mission.

“Strengthening our ability to respond to evolving cyber threats in real time will ensure greater resilience and readiness for future challenges,” stated Major Serbay Cetinkaya, Cell Head at NCIA’s NATO Cyber Security Centre.
