DELTA is a robust Ukrainian battlespace management system that operates in the cloud. The system collects, processes and displays information on hostile troop movements, coordinating defence forces and providing real-time situational awareness to commands at all levels. Created by the military and further developed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, the system has been used and proven effective in active combat situations. Ukraine has tested its interoperability and integration with NATO systems and standards in several NATO exercises, including CWIX 24 – NATO’s biggest interoperability exercise.
The Avengers platform is an artificial intelligence solution able to detect and analyze video data from drones and stationary cameras. By using the tool, Ukrainian defence forces can automatically detect 12,000 units of enemy equipment on a weekly basis. NATO Edge 24 was the first international conference where the Ukrainian defence forces presented this innovative solution.
“Today, we are showcasing not only the possibilities of our system DELTA but also a lot more – the collaboration of the best Ukrainian technologies we currently use on our battlefield,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Yelyzaveta Boiko. “The AI platform Avengers, built during the active war, is a great example of how to apply AI on the battlefield. It already allows us to detect 12,000 targets daily, reducing routine work for warfighters and saving a lot of time for decision-making. Integrating the latest robotic technologies like MAGURA and NEMESIS, as well as different sensors and radars from the allies, into the DELTA system gives our defence forces an operational advantage over the enemy.”
The Ukrainian booth also showcased technology and innovation from different Ukrainian drone and robotic platform manufacturers. They displayed their multi-purpose surface unmanned vehicle maritime drone, MAGURA, and the heavy bomber drone with satellite communications, NEMESIS. Both solutions are making a difference on the battlefield.
Tech Force in UA (TFUA), a coalition of leading defence manufacturers of innovative weaponry was also present at the booth. Since 2014, TFUA have been supplying the Ukrainian Army with robotic systems and software products.
In addition, Lieutenant Colonel Artem Martynenko, from the Centre of Innovations and Defence Technologies Development of the Digital Branch of their Ministry of Defence participated in the plenary panel "Hyperwar: Adoption of AI and implications for private sector cooperation". The panel was moderated by NCIA Legal Adviser Sujin Chan-Allen with the participation of Antoine de Braquilanges, Helsing Managing Director, and Jeroen van der Vlugt, Chief Information Officer of the Dutch Ministry of Defence.
“Unfortunately, Ukraine is forced to be innovative to protect itself and fight with a big and cruel enemy,” stated LTC Martynenko. “DELTA is a platform for multi-domain operations, Avengers is a platform for delivering AI to the battlefield, and different drones represented here by Ukrainian manufacturers are already fighting instead of humans. These are examples of innovative solutions associated with the future that are already happening. Keynote speakers of NATO Edge said that partners should be ready for the future war. But let's be honest, it's already happening in Ukraine. The Ukrainian delegation came here to share our current experience with partners to contribute to collective security.”
NCIA was extremely grateful for Ukraine’s presence of the delegation at NATO Edge 24, which serves as a reminder of their role as a steadfast partner to NATO. Ukraine has positioned itself as a leader in battlefield innovation. Participants at NATO Edge 24 were impressed by the technology and solutions presented by Ukrainian specialists, especially in the extremely challenging current context posed by the Russian unprovoked war of aggression.
