NCIA and Latvia host joint exercise to enhance defence readiness against threats on Latvian border

The NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), in partnership with the Latvian National Guard, conducted Exercise Baltic Trust 25 (BATT25) and mini Technical Interoperability Exercise 25 (mTIE25) from 18 to 28 August 2025, at the Selonia Training Area, in Latvia.

This joint exercise aimed to significantly improve the readiness and coordination of Latvian and Allied forces, and international partners, in defending against class 1 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance (ISR) and offensive operations.

BATT25 focused on reactions to drone attacks and ISR missions, while mTIE25, focused on attack scenarios and Find, Fix, Track, Target, Engage, Assess (F2T2EA) processes. Both exercises targeted training UAS and counter-UAS (C-UAS) personnel to operate effectively in degraded battlefield conditions, testing and validating technical standards, in order to increase proficiency in tactical operations and better coordination between NATO Allies and Partners.

Throughout the exercise, participants utilized and tested a wide array of class 1 drones, detection and countermeasure systems including radars, acoustic sensors, infrared and optical cameras, radio detectors, fixed and mobile jammers, radio stations, spectrum analyzers, and demonstration systems.

The event saw the participation of approximately 470 personnel, including 210 from Latvia, 160 from NCIA and NATO, and 100 industry specialists. Together with Latvia, 13 other NATO Nations participated in the event, as well as selected Partner Nations, such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Ukraine.

This exercise underscores Latvia’s and NATO’s commitment to maintaining a robust and interoperable defence posture against evolving UAV threats, and enhancing joint operational coordination with Allies and Partners.
