Digital Modernization

NATO capabilities and technologies need to constantly and consistently perform in peak conditions regardless of external threat situations. Obsolete communications and information systems pose a threat to NATO's cyber security as NATO's digital environment requires modernization, optimization, and transformation to accommodate vast data management.

We support NATO by leading the modernization of NATO data centres and validating the security of NATO's systems and assets. NATO data centres are responsible for hosting data essential for daily operations and delivering new NATO operational networks, which will modernize and uplift the communication and collaboration across the NATO Command Structure, ultimately enhancing NATO's digital transformation. Working alongside Allied partners and industry, we continuously source for emerging, competitive and innovative capabilities to digitally modernize NATO's core communications infrastructure.

NATO's Digital Backbone

NATO's digital backbone is the transatlantic secure core communication infrastructure that provides NATO with a digital platform for operational command and control, deterrence and collective defence and political consultation. The digital backbone is built on top of the existing telecom and network infrastructure provided by nations and the NATO command structure. The backbone provides the technical means to ensure universal connectivity and data transport across various domains and locations.

NCIA experts work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to protect the NATO digital backbone. The Agency delivers the critical technology that make up this digital backbone, allowing 31 Nations to communicate effectively and securely with each other. As part of this, we diligently work to evolve all components of the backbone to the entire NATO entity, its member countries and NATO's online presence against cyberattacks and threats. We also maintains the backbones infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, ensuring that it is resilient and implementing upgrades when required.

The digital backbone has the potential to transform the way we work across the NATO Enterprise by improving functionality, leveraging cloud services and emerging and disruptive technologies.
