Our Governance
NATO Communications and Information Organisation (NCIO)
Established on 1 July 2012 by the North Atlantic Council (NAC) as part of the NATO Agencies Reform initiative, the NCIO was formed through the merger of several NATO bodies. It operates as a subsidiary body within NATO, ensuring strategic direction and oversight.
The NCIO consists of the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), its executive body, and the Agency Supervisory Board (ASB), its governing body.
Agency Supervisory Board (ASB)
The NCIO’s Agency Supervisory Board (ASB) is composed by representatives from all 32 NATO Member Nations. As the sole entity reporting to the NAC, the ASB provides strategic governance and oversight to NCIA, ensuring that it operates efficiently.
The ASB elects a Chair by consensus among its representatives. The authority of the NCIO ASB Chair derives from the ASB, and their role is to facilitate the discussions and to assist the Board in making informed decisions. The NCIO ASB Chair does not have independent decision-making authority, final decisions rest with the Nations.
Our Locations
We are a team of over 3000 civilian and military staff members, located in five campuses and 30 direct support locations throughout Europe and North America.
NCIA's central elements are split between Brussels, Braine-l'Alleud, Mons, Oeiras and The Hague. Our CIS Support Units (CSUs), logistics centres and satellite ground stations enable NATO networks, service operations, exercises and IT infrastructure.
