NCIA attends global MilSatCom conference in London

From 4 to 7 November 2024, the annual global MilSatCom conference took place in London, United Kingdom. Hosted by the SAE Media Group, this year marks the 26th edition of the conference, which sees the largest gathering of military satellite communications (MilSatCom) professionals.

As NATO’s communications technology service provider, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) operates seven satellite ground stations and one satellite centre, enabling seamless and secure communication channels for command centres and deployed forces across the Alliance.

Pinar Yasar Orten, Head of Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Technologies at NCIA, participated in the conference with a session entitled ‘Utilising LEO and Multi-Orbit SATCOM for Military Operations’ on day two. “Military SATCOM is critical to mission success and multi-orbit SATCOM is a game changer for keeping a technological edge in communications,” Yasar Orten stated.

From a military operations perspective, blending multi-orbit satellites and using multi-orbit ground stations leverage diverse military activities in the most efficient way. Multi-orbit satellite communications supported by equally capable ground terminals brings resiliency and efficiency to military operations while posing some challenges for technology and for operators. However, these challenges pave the way for developing technologically and keeping the technological edge for military operations.

In today’s global context, the operational environment is complex and rapidly changing due to the pace of the technological developments, and adapting to these changes is crucial to conduct successful missions.

In the margins of the conference, the Women in MilSatCom forum took place, where Laryssa Patten, Head of NCIA’s specialized Space team, gave a keynote address. Patten outlined key messages of action for women working in the industry: Display your skills and knowledge, seek out new challenges, claim more technical spaces, and inspire the next generation by being a visible leader and mentor.

Satellite communications is an integral part of securing seamless data and information exchange during operations and exercises. NCIA continues to experiment with and develop this technology, alongside industry leaders to ensure NATO maintains a technical advantage.

Pinar Yasar Orten will also be a speaker at NCIA’s flagship event, NATO Edge 24, taking place from 3 to 5 December in Tampa, Florida, United States. On day two, Yasar Orten will lead a breakout session on ‘Employment Options of LEO SATCOM for Military Usage in NATO context’. The discussion will explore best practices and technical solutions to de-risk industrial supply chains and improve industrial supply quality, including safety as a key quality for defence products. Other panellists contributing to the session include participants from NATO Allied Command Transformation, as well as industry experts from Astrolight, Airbus Defence and Space, and UltiSat.
