In his current role as a Senior Voice and Video Engineer Instructor, Casero has enhanced the learning experience of his students by developing a digital collaboration environment to support the Academy's education and training delivery. The digital collaboration environment makes it possible for students to test their knowledge and skills from courses attained at the NCI Academy and allows them to transfer those skills from the classroom to the workplace.

This year, Casero was awarded NATO's highest award, the Meritorious Service Medal, in recognition of his efforts in developing a collaboration space to support the NCI Academy's education and training delivery to students.

Why is the NCI Academy important for the Agency?

The NCI Academy is important asset for the Agency and NATO. It consolidates education and training services, supports capability development, and fosters interoperability and cooperation.

Technology evolves rapidly, therefore the Academy's role is crucial in equipping Agency personnel with the necessary skills, knowledge, and capabilities to fulfil NATO's core tasks effectively. We ensure that our teaching materials are up-to-date and relevant, so we can students with a digital collaboration space where they can test their knowledge.

Why is a collaboration space for students important in learning?

A collaboration space for students is crucial in enhancing the learning experience, as it promotes teamwork, communication, and the exchange of ideas. It provides a platform for students to engage in group projects, share perspectives, and collectively problem-solve. In a collaborative space, students can leverage diverse strengths, learn from each other, and collectively contribute to a richer and more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

At the NCI Academy, our usage of the collaborative environment not only promotes a sense of community but also cultivates essential skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, and conflict resolution. Additionally, it mirrors real-world scenarios where cooperation is key to success, preparing students for future professional endeavours.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

The most rewarding aspect my role is witnessing the transformation and success of my students. Seeing them grasp complex concepts, acquire new skills, and gain confidence in navigating new technologies is truly fulfilling.

Knowing that I play a part in their professional development and journey toward expertise in collaboration solutions is immensely satisfying. As an instructor, I feel a sense of accomplishment when students apply their knowledge in meaningful ways in their careers. The opportunity to empower others with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the rapidly evolving world of technology is what makes being an instructor so rewarding.

What advice do you give most to your students?

Something I often emphasize to my students is the importance of continuous learning. In the ever-evolving field of technology, staying curious and committed to expanding one's knowledge is key to long-term success. Whether it is through pursuing additional certifications, attending workshops, or simply exploring new technologies on their own, I encourage my students to make learning a lifelong habit.

I also stress the significance of hands-on experience and honing communication skills. Theory is essential, but practical application solidifies understanding. [A skill that often accompanies hands-on experience is] the ability to convey technical information clearly and work collaboratively with others. It is not just about knowing the concepts, it is about being able to apply them in diverse situations while effectively sharing knowledge with colleagues and clients.
