Diversity and Inclusion

Reflecting the communities we help to protect.

As an international organisation, NATO highly values inclusion and perceives diversity as a strength. As such, NATO strives to ensure that its workforce reflects the diversity of the nearly one billion citizens it is sworn to protect.

Similarly at NCIA, we strive to hire, train and retain the best people to achieve a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.

Our staff members represent the diverse populations of our Alliance, and their ideas generate innovation, growth and capability. We welcome people of different nationalities, genders, ages, races and ethnic origins, religions or beliefs, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations and disabilities.

At NCIA, we champion diversity, foster fairness and drive inclusion. We aspire to create a workplace that reflects the range and unity of our Alliance; a workplace that is an inclusive space for all.

Our goal is to enable fair access to opportunities and resources and to achieve an inclusive work environment in which everyone treats each other with respect, and can contribute authentically to NCIAs success.

The best way to have a positive impact on our people, our working culture and workplace? By prioritizing in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and wellbeing! Start with a clear baseline, keep monitoring your progress and be transparent about the developments.

Jonathan Garcia-Miralles, Diversity Officer

Our commitment to driving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion rests on these four pillars: engaging everyone, evolving ourselves, embedding inclusion and enabling diversity.

Engaging Everyone

We are committed to quantitatively tracking and accurately measuring our diversity, equity and inclusion statistics transparently. These metrics allow us to monitor where we are, set benchmarks for where we aim to be and provide an accountability measure for all of our efforts.

Evolving Ourselves

We recognize that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) requires commitment and responsibility on an individual level and is an ongoing journey. We equip our employees with the tools and resources needed to drive this self-education and enable growth.

Embedding Inclusion

We understand that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) demands integration of an inclusive lens on our institutional systems. From recruitment to separation, we have embedded tools and programmes to ensure an inclusive experience for our employees.

Enabling Diversity

We aim to foster an environment where everyone can bring their whole selves to the workplace and perform to their best abilities. We implement various initiatives focused on diversity dimensions (gender, race, religious) and wellbeing and inclusion to stimulate authenticity and empower our workplaces' diversity communities.

Women, Peace and Security

NATO recognizes the critical importance of women's full, equal and meaningful participation in all aspects of peace and stability. As such, NATO endeavours to integrate gender perspectives across its three core tasks (deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security) and throughout its political and military structures. This commitment led to its first formal Policy on Women, Peace and Security in December 2007, and efforts to ensure the success of this important work are on-going.
