As most of you realise, NATO is building a new headquarters building in Brussels, across the road from the old HQ. Ground was broken on the building in October 2010 and it is expected that it will be occupied in early 2016. The construction work is proceeding well, with the building now clearly visible from the road, with some wings having reached the fourth of seven floors. The building will house all of the NATO staff, including the NCI Agency, as well as the national delegations. It has recently been decided that once the new building is complete the partner nations will be housed in Batiment Z.
The Agency has a major responsibility for the new building, specifically the delivery of the core IT and communications services. This involves provision of two resilient server rooms, as well as all of the client devices, local area networking services as well as connections to the wide area communications, video teleconferencing services, cross domain services, unified communications and collaborations, and testing and migration support services. This project will provide a modern, flexible and reliable IT infrastructure for the NATO Headquarters staff. An important aspect will be the provision of some of these services to the national delegations, linking them to important sources of information within the HQ.
On the 19
th
of June 2012, the NAC authorised the release of the Invitation for Bids for the main contract for this important effort. It is expected that this will go out in a matter of days to industry and that a contractor will be selected before the year’s end. The contractor will then be responsible for carrying out all elements of the work and delivering the systems in time for the users to move across the street from the old building in early 2016.
